Whale Spotted Near Jersey City

While it’s something people don’t usually think they’ll see in the Hudson River, a humpback whale was recently spotted  near Liberty Island. The whale has been spotted on the Hudson presumably following menhaden fish before making its way to the New York Harbor area. Dozens of New Jersey and New York residents have posted images and videos of the whale on social media, causing the #HudsonRiver hashtag to temporarily trend on Twitter. It was determined that the mammal was a humpback whale. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Stromeir stated in an interview with radio station 1010 WINS that the whale does not seem to be in any distress.

Contrary to the idea that whales aren’t usually seen in the Hudson River area, there have been sightings in the recent years. In 2014 alone there were a total of 87 sightings, due to whale tracking. One group that takes part in this tracking is Gotham Whale. Gotham Whale tracks many different sea life in the New York area from whales to seals to dolphins. They state on their website that their mission is to “study, advocate for, and educate about the whales and marine mammals of New York City, through Citizen Science.” They describe Citizen Science as “a movement to include average citizens in scientific research.”

People visit the New Jersey/New York to see Broadway shows, museums, and massive skyscrapers; Now they can add whale watching to the list of things to do.
