Shadman Restaurant is a small restaurant on Grove Street that lets Jersey City residents experience “authentic Pakistani and Indian cuisine.” Just walking through the door allows one to smell the spicy food in the air. The restaurant features an open lunch buffet that features a large variety of foods at the low price of $8 during the hours of 11am and 3pm. While the restaurant had its fair amount of customers it definitely became at full capacity during its lunch hours.
Once in the restaurant make sure to appreciate the interior mural painted to the left wall. The mural features a city skyline painted flawlessly throughout the left portion of the restaurant. It integrates very well with the overall decor of the restaurant.
As is common in an open buffet, you go in, grab your food, and pay the bill afterwards. As this was my first time trying this type of food, I can definitely say, besides the vegetable-filled white rice and the classic tomato, carrot, and lettuce salad, I went in blind. Despite this I gave things a try, eventually landing on chicken curry, roti, and some chana. While this is the particular food I chose, the menu is definitely not limited to these choices. Besides the standard buffet, the restaurant features an extensive menu, ranging from kabab rolls to different goat and chicken dishes to desserts like kheer (Pakistani-style rice pudding).
While I am in no way saying that I am an expert in this category of food, I will definitely say that the food was amazing. While most of the food is spicy as one would come to expect, it is not spicy to the point where it interferes with the foods flavor and overall taste. This is my first time trying this variety of food and I can definitely say I would love to visit the restaurant again.
